Quebec’s independent investigations office (BEI) has been assigned to examine a provincial police operation early Friday near Prévost in the Laurentians that ended when a man described as suicidal drove the wrong way down Highway 117 struck an oncoming vehicle.
According to information gathered thus far by the BEI, a 911 call was received at 11:50 p.m. Thursday reporting that a suicidal man had left in a car.
A Sûreté du Québec squad car located the vehicle travelling the wrong way along southbound Highway 117 and pursued it for “about one minute.”
The car being pursued struck another vehicle on the highway. The 26-year-old driver of the car that sparked the chase suffered critical injuries. The condition of the driver of the other car was not immediately known.
The BEI, which is called in whenever someone is killed or injured during a police operation in Quebec, has assigned eight investigators to the case and the Montreal police department is providing technical support in the form of two accident reconstruction analysts.
Anyone with any information on the incident is urged to contact the BEI through their website.
