In between bouts of mild panic and just trying to get by, I find myself fascinated by this idea of “social distancing.” For me, “social distancing” has felt a lot more cooperative, social, and close than the norm.
Most of the people I know practice “social distancing” not out of fear for themselves, but for fear for others more vulnerable to the virus than them. By agreeing to isolate ourselves, we have demonstrated an incredible social cohesion. Think of all the economic and social costs we pay to look out for one another. Think of all the sacrifice in the name of the greater good.
It’s a strange relief to have a problem that feels like it unites us all together. What more might be possible if we could truly feel like we were all on the same side, all in the same tribe?
